U.S. Temporarily Halts New Student Visa Interviews Amid Expanded Social Media Screening

by Carolyn Lee
May 28, 2025

The U.S. State Department has paused the scheduling of new student and exchange visitor visa interviews to implement enhanced social media vetting procedures. This initiative aims to bolster national security by thoroughly reviewing applicants’ online activities.

While current interview appointments remain unaffected, the move has raised concerns about potential impacts on international student enrollment and freedom of speech. Some critics have expressed concern that global talent may be deterred and that federally supported research may also be negatively affected.

Universities and advocacy groups are closely monitoring the situation.

CLP will continue to track policy shifts affecting international students for our many F-1 student investor clients and the international student community.

If you have questions, please contact us. Our team can help assess your situation and take appropriate legal steps to safeguard your future in the U.S.
